Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the factors influencing the level of alcohol-related problems of college students.

Methods: The subjects(n=449) reported by questionnaires their background characteristics, alcohol use, Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test(AUDIT), alcohol outcome expectancy, processes of change, and adult attachment type. The subjects were classified into 4 groups by the total score of AUDIT. Data was analyzed to identify the factors influencing alcohol-related problems using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: The current study showed 70.2% of the subjects had a drinking problem. Gender, smoking, living situation, affiliation with a club, the type of alcohol, age at first drink and alcohol refusal difficulty were associated with the alcohol-related problem. Moderate problem drinkers(AUDIT 8~15) reported the lowest score in processes of change and the most severe problem drinkers(AUDIT more than 20) presented the highest scores in alcohol outcome expectancy and close adult attachment type.

Conclusion: The factors related to problem drinking of college students were different according to the severity of the drinking problem and were related to each other. The approaches to lessen the alcohol problem of college students should include multi-dimensional factors.
